The 19th Annual CCO Workshop
On February 22, 2019, SICA held the 19th CCO Workshop at the Coast Capri Hotel in Kelowna. The workshop, which is named CCO for Contractors, Consultants and Owners, prides itself on being an open and transparent conversation between all parties in the construction industry. Bringing the contractors, consultants and owners together in one room to discuss current industry related topics has been benefiting collaboration between the parties since 2000.
“The CCO is always informative and interesting to hear current issues and or concerns of the industry,” said one of this year’s attendees.
This year’s theme was “Together We Build” and included a panel discussion on community benefits agreements and social procurement. The panel included Mary Van Buren, President of the Canadian Construction Association, Chris Atchison, President of the BC Construction Association, Rory Kulmala, CEO of the Vancouver Island Construction Association and Mike Jacobs, CEO of Emil Anderson Construction.
The conversation centered around the BC Government's Community Benefits Agreement. The controversy in the government's lack of understanding of all the initiatives, charities and impacts that construction companies are already having in our communities. It was clear at the end of the discussion that the construction industry needs to continue to make our voice heard in our communities and at all levels of government.
John Glennon of Sandler Training spoke to the attendees on the success triangle and the importance of hiring for attitude. David Volk, Jenkins Marzban Logan LLP, delighted the crowd for another year with the annual Legal Update. His presentation highlights recent court cases relating to construction and shared valuable tips on contracts and where things can go wrong.
In the afternoon, CCO attendees dispersed into breakout sessions, which included:
- Practical Business Documentation, presented by Pihl Law Corp
- The Realities of the Big BIM Theory, presented by Civic Legal LLP
- Workplace Substance Use, presented by WorkSafeBC
- Hiring Foreign Workers and Succession Planning, presented by BDO
- Top 10 Construction Contract Errors, presented by Pihl Law Corp
To finish the day, attendees gathered at the Victaulic Networking Reception and shared insights over appetizers and cocktails. Overall, attendees had great things to say about their day including, “the CCO Workshop is a great opportunity to meet industry professionals, share knowledge and get a perspective of all sides of the construction industry.”
