FREE - Supervisor Training: Tailgate Toolkit - VILT

FREE - Course registration fees are currently waived with funding via government and community partnerships.

Supervisor Training is recommended for those in front-line supervisory or engagement positions such as forepersons, superintendents, project managers, and first aid attendants. However, the learning outcomes of the course are applicable to many roles. If you work in a construction leadership position, or are on a leadership development path, this course is for you.

You will gain the tools to confidently discuss substance use, mental health, and pain management with your team and walk away with the confidence to recognize, support, and refer crew members in need.

  • Why men are disproportionately at risk of toxic drug poisoning

  • Mental health 101
  • Mental Health First Aid
  • Naloxone Training
  • Colonization and Trauma
  • Chronic Pain
  • Local resources

Course Format:

  • Live, Online, Instructor-led training
  • ZOOM invite link and course materials will be provided to you in advance of the course

Technology & Participation:

  • Computer or laptop with webcam - This course will involve on-screen interaction with your instructor and classmates, reading/viewing on-screen content like slides or videos, and interacting via typing with questions or responses. For this reason, we do not recommend attend using a tablet or cell phone.
  • A quiet space with minimal distractions: Please plan to be fully engaged in the class, and clear your work schedule just as you would for attendance in an in-class program.

Prerequisite: (Not required but recommended)

It is recommended that organisations who register their staff for this training first schedule a Tailgate Toolkit: Toolbox Talk for their team. This talk is intended as an introductory conversation about the complex issues surrounding substance use within our industry. 

Four (4) morning sessions (4 hours each):

  1. May 09, 2023 - 8:30am - 12:30pm
  2. May 10, 2023 - 8:30am - 12:30pm
  3. May 11, 2023 - 8:30am - 12:30pm
  4. May 12, 2023 - 8:30am - 12:30pm

Attendance in all sessions are mandatory for course completion.

Course Instructor Information

Colby Young, BSW, DPSM

Formerly working as a support worker and program facilitator with a local non-profit organization.  Colby has years of experience educating members of our community.  He has previously provided skill building programs to people in Victoria’s Downtown core experiencing mental illness, homelessness, and addiction. Colby has received a Bachelor of Social Work and a Diploma in Public Sector Management from the University of Victoria.  His previous experience with local services and initiatives grounds Colby’s approach to harm reduction in a local context.  He brings a collaborative approach to his facilitation that seeks to build upon the strengths of our industry, teams, and leaders.
